Review: Mary Poppins Returns

Updated!  After watching the first Mary Poppins 1964

Happy New Year everyone!  We went to watch a movie yesterday and it was my girl's first cinema experience.  So how was Mary Poppins Returns?  Here's my take on it.

Firstly, I haven't watch the original Mary Poppins.  Somehow, I wasn't up to watching it and I am not sure why.  I mean I have watched Julie Andrews's movies before, like The Sound of Music but just don't know why I never get to watch Mary Poppins.  But having said that, I did listen to their music and I like them.

Now for Mary Poppins Returns, I really like the cinematography.  Compare to the 1964 one, the 2018 one is of course 100% more impressive, especially the part where they were in the cartoon land.

As for the story line, I feel it is a little weak.  But then again, I can't compare it to the 1964 version since I haven't watch it yet.  Spoiler alert:  Like I don't understand the part that Meryl Streep has, being the weird cousin who owns a shop that fixes everything.  I mean in the end what happened to the bowl?  Was it fixed?  Did I missed it?

Acting wise, I really like the Emily Blunt's version of Mary Poppins.  I also like the Julie Andrews version too.  So I really feel it was smart for Julie Andrews not to appear as cameo in the 2018 version.  It was because she doesn't want to take away Emily Blunt's limelight.

In terms of music (rubbing my hands), I won't say I am an expert in music but having Grade 8 in piano does help a lot and I have the ears for them.  The 2018 version is not catchy at all and at the end of the movie, I can't even recall a single song.  Nothing beats 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, 'A Spoonful of Sugar', 'Feed the Birds', Let's Go Fly A Kite' and 'Chim Chim Cher-ee'.

Did I enjoy it?  I did as this is my girl's first movie and she sat through it.  Whether she understands or not is a different story.  I enjoyed this bonding time with my girl though she was kinda more focused on the popcorn than anything else.

Growing too fast.  Next year will be going to kindy already.

OK, so I managed to watch the 1964 version on YouTube and now I can understand why the story was like that.  I didn't read the book, so perhaps the movie is following the book, but I still feel a lack of story line in the 2nd movie.  But again, the first movie doesn't make much sense either.

In terms of music, I still stand by my opinion as above.

In terms of Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, I feel Julie Andrews was much better.  Emily Blunt lack smile and that jolly but strict character.  She was strict but not jolly at all.  Her eyes are too strong compared to Julie Andrews, soft and gentle.  To me, Emily Blunt's character here was somewhat like Nanny McPhee.

In terms of cinematography, the 2018 version is so much better thanks to technology.  And the part where they were in the cartoon land, the costumes were designed in such a way that they looked cartoonish.

Now that I have watched the 1964 version, I can understand a certain scene.  Like the underwater scene was supposed to replicate the scene in the 1964 which was deleted.  The character Jack was supposed to be like Bert.  Meryl Streep character was supposed to be like Uncle Albert.

From what I read, the 2018's Mary Poppins character is much closer to the book than the 1964 version.  I really like the 2018 scene in the bowl.  I like how when they walked on the supposedly china floor, the sound from the shoe were exactly like how u knock a china with your spoon.  Much more fineness to detail.

In conclusion, I really like watching the 2018 version but I preferred the 1964 songs.  Maybe if I listened to it the 2nd time, I might change my mind.
