Year 2017 in review

Year 2017 has been a so-so year for me.  I hardly could remember the good things that happened but the bad things were so memorable.  This year, I had all the bad luck ever.  It is just not a good year for me.  So, I am hoping year 2018 will be better. The Bad 1. I slipped and fell and hit my coccyx badly while walking to the parking lot to get my car.  It was so painful that I drove in the rain groaning in pain. 2. Because of the fall, I went to my panel clinic the next morning because it was getting more painful.  I got 2 days MC for that.  But as I was on my way home, a random car just came and knocked the front of my car, while my car was stationary.  The other driver kept on insisting it was my fault and refused to give me his name, phone number or IC.   3. And because of the fall, I signed up for a chinese physiotherapy and had to pay about RM800+ for 7 sessions but only did 4 sessions and the physiotherapist completely forgotten about me and I am fed up of remindi

Review : Sekinchan 2017

Image
On Christmas day, we decided to take a spontaneous trip to Sekinchan.  We have been living in Selangor all our lives, but never really explore that far part of Selangor. The night before, on Christmas eve, we had attended an event and only slept at 1am.  Automatically woke up at 7am and then decided to go ahead with the Sekinchan trip.  I drove, so can you imagine how exhausted I was.  But since the family wanted to go, I thought why not.  It's not easy to have a time like this together. I didn't take much photos, because I forgot.  But hey, you can find this photos anyway.  Sekinchan is just a very small fishing/paddy town. It took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Petaling Jaya to Sekinchan.  I have been to Kuala Selangor before and I didn't know it is just further up from there.  I had always thought Sekinchan is somewhere near Morib since it's a seaside.  The drive was very easy and smooth on the LATAR highway, which is about 30 minutes.  Then once ex

Review : Genting Highlands 2017

Image
Just came back from a super busy long weekend.  Supposed to go and enjoy or rest, but I was running about so much that I am super exhausted.  It has been a very eventful long Christmas weekend. My family went up to Genting Highlands on 21-22 Dec 2017.  That's a Thursday and Friday.  We got free rooms at First World Hotel, so thought why not check it out.  It's been ages since I went anyway and this is the first time for my girl to go. We boarded a bus from 1 Utama and arrived at the Awana Skyway Station which is just next to the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets.  We took the cable car up and arrived at Sky Avenue. First thing that attracted us was the big LED screens which takes up 4 floors.  This is where the light and sound show is.  But when we arrived, we missed the timing, so didn't see any of it.  But don't worry, they have one every hour and every half hour, the show will be different.  I only managed to catch the Christmas one and the one a

Tried and tested cooking keto : Spinach and onion coconut milk soup

Image
This doesn't look very appetizing but believe me, this is super delicious!  It's not that difficult to make too.  Saw a few recipes online about this, but some not so keto friendly.  So, made some changes to the ingredients and voila! Ingredients: A bunch of English Spinach leaves - I bought a bunch of spinach and pluck out the leaves. 1 yellow onion, roughly chopped - Yellow onions are sweeter so, if on keto diet, then don't put too much. 1/2 cup of coconut milk 1 cup of chicken stock Coconut or olive oil for cooking Salt for taste Method: 1. Put some oil into a big pot.  Stir-fry the onions until they caramelized.  If onions are raw, it will affect the taste of the soup.  If onions are caramelized, the soup will be sweeter. 2. Add chicken stock and spinach and cook until the spinach is thoroughly cooked. 3. If you have a hand blender, switch off the fire and then blend the onions and spinach leaves until fine.  If you don't have a hand blender, scoop

Review : Coco the Movie

Recently I went to watch Coco the Movie with my colleagues.  I was tempted to bring my girl along, but after watching it, I think it won't be a good idea. If you want to know the synopsis, read Wikipedia .  The main protagonist is a 12 year old boy by the name of Miguel.  Coco is his great-grandmother.  They are a Hispanic community and celebrates the Day of the Dead.  The story is about family love. I won't talk about the story line here since you can read tonnes of reviews on this movie.  But I will share about the animations.  They are so beautiful and the colours were amazing!  I am not a hi-tech person here and I don't know how to compare with other animations (not that I have watch many), but apparently they used state-of-the-art technology to create and many hours of manpower was spent to make it come life.   As for the story line, I like the movie.  It has a blend of comedy, drama, horror (if you view skeletons negatively like me) and slightly action-pa

Tried and tested cooking keto : Spare Ribs Pork Curry

Image
I woke up at 5am automatically today.  So, I decided to do a nice and long morning meditation.  After that it was almost 6am and I couldn't get back to sleep.  So I thought, why not I cook something easy for my keto lunch and dinner?  So I did just that and I woke up before everyone else and started defrosting, cutting and cooking.  My mom was surprised to see me so hard at work. I adapted the recipe from My Natural Family .  However, since I did this on a whim, I couldn't find any chicken thighs in the fridge, instead I found pork spare ribs.  So I thought, hmm, maybe I can substitute chicken with pork instead?  I was getting a little tired of chicken anyway but pork means my mom won't eat since she is off-pork for many years now.   I quickly defrosted the spare ribs and cut whatever vegetables I could find.  I found half of a large zucchini and used all of that instead.  My mom added some chinese cabbage leaves and leftover squid. Here's my adaptation

Review: Kiddomo Universe at The Starling Mall

Image
Since I was busy chasing after my girl, I wasn't able to take a good picture of the place.  But here's the link on Facebook .   This fairly new place which is located at Level 3 of the Starling Mall has a new concept of playground for the kids.  It wasn't like Jungle Gym or the other indoor playground as everything about Kiddomo is about technology. However, I do find the prices a little too pricey although you can stay as long as you want in there, but RM55 on weekdays and RM65 on weekends for kids from 2 years and above, I think it is way too pricey. And parents/guardian is RM15 person.  FOC for kids below 2 years old and senior citizens. Perhaps if they give it free for the parents/guardian, it would have been much more worth it.  I don't know.  Probably not since parents and guardian also can play along.  That's the good side of Kiddomo.  That you can join your kids along and unlike the indoor playgrounds, not many parents can follow along if yo

Ketogenic Diet

I have been the 1% of women who put on massive weight while breastfeeding.  I know many women said they have lost all their pregnancy weight and became even thinner when they breastfeed but I wasn't one of them.   Because I was having supply issues, I was constantly searching for my milk booster.  If anyone said they ate some cheese and boost their supply, I follow suit.  If they said they drank some milk shake with lots of cream and boost their supply, I go for it.  I tried all the fatty and creamy and cheesy and anything that says boost milk supply.  I am pretty sure I am not the only one, but I am probably the few that put on weight and never lost them. After confinement, I was able to lost all my pregnancy weight.  I was happy and I thought that will stay and that I will lose more once I have establish breastfeeding.  That was fat hope and then I decided not to lose weight at all because if I eat lesser, my milk supply suffers.  I ate more than I should and was eating

Tips for new moms on breast pumps and breastfeeding issues

Factors to consider when buying a new breast pump 1. Noise level As mentioned in my previous post, you might want to get a breast pump that is not too loud, so that you can pump while baby is sleeping.  Medela is quite loud.  Avent too.  Lacte Duet, the one that I have been using is soft.  Not too sure about other brands though. 2. Hands-free Whether you are working mom or not, being hands-free while pumping makes your life easier.  You want your hands to be free while the pump is going on, so that you can kill time.  Usually this is the time for me to watch my favourite Korean variety or drama shows.  Some moms like to walk around to do chores with the pump running.  So, it depends on you.  But you would not want to hold the bottles for 30 minutes straight.   3. Portable There were times when there is no socket in the pumping room or spoiled.  Or there are times the room allocated doesn't have a socket.  So, being portable is best.  Sometimes can pump when walking

Hope these tips help for new moms!

I was chatting with a friend who is currently pregnant with her first child and I find myself trying to equip her with as much information as possible about the impending motherhood.  I went through a difficult time, mainly because I was doing everything on my own.  I was researching everything, driving myself to the hospital for check-up (because my husband can't drive), buying all the necessary things and until the last minute, I was preparing and felt myself under-prepare and was nervous and anxious all mixed up. Being a mother for the first time is a very exciting and yet very anxious.  I was reading a lot on Google, some good, some not.  So here's what I found.  Bear in mind, I am not a doctor or gynae.  If you want to find out more, best is to refer to them. First Trimester 1. To tell or not to tell The moment you get that BFP, you are super excited already, especially if you have been planning to have a kid and have been trying for a long time.  Then as mu

Review : KL Bird Park

Image
Few weeks back, we visited the KL Bird Park.  The last time I entered the bird park was when I was in my teens and now entering as a mother.  I brought the GB Pockit stroller along and I must say this is one place that is super stroller friendly.  So no worries of stairs and such.  For more information about the admission fees and so on, please visit their website before going.  It was my girl's and nephew's first bird park visit.  My girl was excited in the beginning, with birds roaming freely and peacocks greeting you from everywhere, and not behind cages. Then at the convenience shop, we got ice creams and suddenly this peacock was so interested to eat it.  When I was getting the wet wipes out of my bag, this peacock pecked at her ice cream which she was holding in her hand while sitting on the stroller.  I was paranoid about bird flu and immediately gave the whole ice cream to it.  So I decided to buy another ice cream in a cup for my girl and while I was awa

Review: Petaling Jaya Community Library - Bayan Bestari

Image
Last Saturday, my girl and I visited the Petaling Jaya Community Library.  I was a member and I registered my girl as a member as well.  I have read about the toys library inside the PJ library and have wanted to visit it since this newspaper article .   For your information, the toys library is situated on the Ground Floor of the PJ Community Library, opens daily from 10am-2pm and 2pm-4pm, except for Mondays opening hours is only 10am-2pm and Fridays opening hours is from 3pm-5pm only.  In order to use this section of the library, you need to register your child as a member which cost RM31 for the first time registration and renewal is RM15 annually. To enter Bayan Bestari, your kid need to be 6 years old and below and you need to pay additional RM7/kid for each session, which I find a little costly for a 2-hour session and was wondering if this is the reason parents doesn't go.  However, comparing to shopping malls indoor playground, this is much, much more reasonabl

I feel bad

I feel very guilty.  I have told myself that I won't repeat the mistakes that other parents made, but I made the same mistake myself.  I guess no one is perfect and we are still bound by our own weaknesses, ego and superego. What happened was this.  Yesterday, I got a new mobile phone.  I don't usually like changing mobile phone and will stick to one as long as it is useful and working and will only change when it is broken and not working.  I am not a mobile phone heavy user.  Just occasionally watch video and whatsapp and facebook after office hours and during weekends only.  In the office, I used my desktop entirely since the office connection is much better than my mobile data or my home Wifi. My husband is the one who is always carelessly using his phone.  Many times, either the motherboard burnt or he dropped it into the water and destroyed it or something or the other.  And you know, the phones we used are not water resistant, are not iPhones and basically not a

Electronic devices

When I was pregnant, I was adamant that I will not give my child any electronic devices.  I believed strongly that there is too much information being fed to the child by electronic devices.  At that time, I have learned that my cousin who has a lot of kids and home-schooled all of them, did not give them any electronic devices and they grew up very well, disciplined and obedient.  So, I was adamant. When I got back to work after maternity, I realised that my parents (who is her babysitter) has put on the TV the whole day for her to watch YouTube and cartoons.  I told my mom once about the negative effects of letting her watch this the whole day and she defensively said my girl did learn how to sing from the TV and YouTube, which I cannot deny. I understand that giving the child electronic devices or YouTube is very easy for babysitters.  Because the child will only sit quietly and watch and not even move one bit.   My sister started giving the tablet to my nephew when he
