Food movies

Something unrelated to pregnancy.  I don't have any cravings during this pregnancy.  Except for maybe cold, flavored drinks.  But not food wise.

But lately, I have been into food/chef/cooking movies and looking for something with lots and lots of food porn.

Here's my list (in no particular ranking).

1. The God of Cookery (1996) - Hong Kong Cantonese movie
I first watched this when it was out in the cinema.  I loved Stephen Chow's movies and during the late 90s, he was having like a movie a year.  For me the best part of the show is always the cooking competition, where they show you their chopping skills, frying skills and then the end product.  I like to see like hot steam coming out from the dishes and makes it so super yummy and delicious.

There's not much food porn here, except during the first part where each chef were to showcase their specialty and the last part during the cooking competition.

2. Eat Man Drink Woman (1994) - Taiwan Mandarin movie
There's so much of food porn here especially right at the beginning where the main lead cook.  And then every meal you will see a whole table full of delicious and yummy food.  Sometimes I wondered how can the 4 of them finish so much of food.

Be warn!  Don't watch on an empty stomach.  Not only the food looks good, the plot is good as well.

3. Kung Fu Chefs (2009) - Hong Kong Cantonese movie
This was a slight disappointment for me.  I was having high expectations as if watching a Stephen Chow but no.  Too much over-the-top acting by Vanness and the Japanese actress.  Super childish to the extend you cringed (I did).

Food porn was at the beginning during the village cooking celebration and a little bit in the middle and during the cooking competition towards the end.  But otherwise, the movie is not so much about food.  But more on Vanness.  Haha.  One reviewer quoted that the movie should be named 'A Tale of Kenichi' (Vanness' name in the movie).  Even then, they didn't do super close up on the food.

The plot was not good at all.  I watched it because of Sammo Hung and he was good.  But not the rest of the casts.

4. The Chinese Feast (1995) - Hong Kong Cantonese movie
This was seriously good.  I love the whole casts.  Although Stephen Chow was not in it, Leslie Cheung is far more superb.  And he is seriously comedic.  Not to mention, Anita Yuen and Leslie Cheung has very good chemistry.

There's lots of food porn here as well.  I like the beginning part of the movie where they show their carving skills and then the middle part where the bad chef try to show off by cooking Beef Crunchy Kueh Teow and the good chef with his Sweet and Sour Pork.  That one was really good and you feel like opening your mouth and putting a piece in it.

And towards the end, during the cooking competition, though I am not a fan of bizarre food, but the bear's palm looked really delicious.  The elephant trunk was not that appetizing.  The monkey's brain was a little turn-off for me, although they didn't really use the real thing.  Seriously, I don't understand how can people be so cruel as to eat live monkey's brain.  But I have heard in real life of people who did.  Crazy Cantonese people.

The plot was good.  The food porn was good.  Another good movie.

5. Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) - Japanese Documentary
This documentary is about one man's passion as a sushi chef.  He is 90 years old this year and still making sushi.  This is one guy who is not about making money, but making his customers satisfy.

There's lots and lots of sushi porn.  Real good ones.  So good that you feel like going to a sushi restaurant just to satisfy that craving.  I love how fresh the sushi was made and the freshest and best seafood was used.

After watching this, I find that the sushi that I have been eating is totally crappy.  Especially those on the conveyor belt made by foreign workers.

6. Le Grand Chef (2007) - South Korean movie
I love the plot of this movie.  There's a lot of food porn on Korean food.  I love to see the passion in the chef while making the food.  If only I could understand the type of Korean food better, I would probably enjoy it more.

The sequel to the above movie.  The plot was not as good as the former.  But overall, it's ok.  I am not a kimchi fan so I don't really know how to enjoy this movie.  I like the way they made kimchi though.  Lots of kimchi porn.

These are the ones that I have watched and liked.  Mostly Asian movies.  I know Western movies also have lots of food movies but they coupled with lots of romantic scenes, which I don't quite enjoy.  Give me a good comedy anytime, any day.

There are also other Asian cooking movies, but I didn't enjoy as much as the above.  So won't mention them.
